Dentist warns brushing your teeth too hard can make them more yellow

Our teeth naturally begin to turn more yellow in time no matter how much attention we pay to our dental hygiene.

When it becomes noticeable, one of the natural responses is too brush them more thoroughly in the hope you can remove the yellow staining and return them to the pearly whites they used to be.

But a dentist has now warned that doing so will actually make the yellowing worse in a video posted on TikTok to explain why our teeth lose their white shine in the first place.

@Doctortristanpeh posed a video captioned: ‘Let’s find out why we have yellow teeth’ and racked up more than 150,000 views as people released they have been making the same mistake for years.

He explained that the outer layer of teeth, known as the enamel, is white in colour, but the next layer underneath, known as dentine, is yellow.

If the enamel wears away, the yellow will start to show through – and scrubbing them harder will only make the problem worse.

The dentist says: “Many people think that brushing teeth harder make them whiter. Brushing too hard wears away the white teeth enamel.

“When the enamel wears away, the teeth become more yellow and can also become more sensitive.

“So brush gently and use a softer brush.”

When viewers questioned how to get the white layer back, he explained that the yellowing process is natural, but recommended treatments or products on offer with your dentist, or whitening trays, to help restore the colour.

People flooded the comments as one said: “I used to think that if I brush harder my teeth will be more clean,” as the dentist replied to say: “Yes that’s really what I see in my patients over my last 17 years as a dentist. A lot of people think that way.”

Another commented: “Thank you for the information I really needed that.”
